Still basking in the afterglow of the national Golden Gloves boxing title he won last
weekend, Bridgeport's Ernie Garza III is leaning toward turning professional in time
for this summer's boxing card in Bay City. Garza, who won the 119-pound title in
impressive fashion, was more definitive about his declaration to turn pro before the
Golden Gloves in Grand Rapids, but said he was asked to participate in an
International amateur event with other national champions. "I'm more likely to turn
pro," Garza said. "(International bouts) would be good for me, but I don't know."
In the meantime, Garza will stay in shape and look to a possible pro debut in Bay
City, where promoters are trying to book a pro-am card on Friday and Saturday, July
18 and 19, at Hooter's.
