Saginaw boxers advance to Gloves nationals

WYOMING -- Two East Michigan boxers will be traveling to the National Golden
Gloves Championships next month. Jose Bernal of Saginaw earned a berth late
Saturday night with a victory over Port Huron's Quintez Banks in the 152-pound
open division final at the Michigan Golden Gloves state championships.
Ernesto Garza, also of the Saginaw Boxing Club, advanced uncontested at 119
pounds. Both will compete in the national tournament May 5-10 at DeVos Place
in downtown Grand Rapids. West Michigan boxers won the other eight
open-division bouts contested at the Grand Valley National Guard Armory and
took the team title by a 104-71 score. Holland's Johnny Garcia was voted
Outstanding Open Boxer after a 5-0 victory over Buena Vista's Morris Young at
141.
Mark Harrison of Pontiac's Unity Club was named Coach of the Year.
Charlotte's Nekhai Hong, the 125 female champion, received the Nick Spruit
Memorial Award for the boxer who best exemplifies to spirit of the Golden
Gloves.
